Ankle reconstruction surgery is a viable treatment option for those suffering from chronic ankle pain and arthritis. There are many causes of ankle arthritis, but the end result is a loss of the slippery cartilage surface and the development of a painful, bone-on-bone joint. The goal of treatment is to relieve pain and improve function.
To relieve pain and restore function, ankle reconstruction surgery can be performed in one of two ways: ankle fusion or ankle replacement.
- Ankle Fusion – The arthritic ankle joints are roughened up and locked into a comfortable position with screws. By eliminating the motion of the joint, pain is relieved.
- Ankle Replacement – The ankle joint is replaced with a prosthesis or artificial ankle made of steel and plastic. This option provides pain relief but also allows the ankle joint to move.
