Ankle Sprains and Fractures

Sprains and fractures are the most common type of ankle injuries. In fact, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reports that roughly 25,000 ankle sprains are experienced every day. An ankle sprain occurs when the foot is twisted beyond its normal range of motion, leading to torn ligaments. Ankle fractures are caused by the same mechanisms but result in broken bones. An ankle fracture occurs when any of the three bones surrounding the ankle joint breaks. Many things, ranging from sudden trips and falls to overuse of the ankle joint through exercise, can cause ankle sprains and fractures.

If you are suffering from an ankle sprain, you may recover by applying a home remedy referred to as the R.I.C.E. method (rest, ice, compression, and elevation). Fortunately, most ankle sprains do very well with physical therapy and never require surgery.

Ankle fracture treatment depends on the severity of the injury.  Fractures are often treated very similarly to sprains.  Often, however, these injuries are unstable or involve the ankle joint and will require surgical treatment.
